We hear this all the time from BMW owners across the South-East. Someone books in expecting a routine gearbox service, but the real reason they called is because the gearbox is already showing signs of a fault. Juddering when pulling away in traffic. Slipping between gears on the motorway. A warning light on the dash. Unusual whining or grinding noises. What they actually need is a gearbox diagnosis and repair, not a routine service.
At Service4Service South-East, we specialise in BMW gearbox repairs, gearbox rebuilds, ZF automatic, DCT, Steptronic and xDrive automatic transmission diagnostics across all models. We do not carry out routine BMW servicing. Gearbox and transmission repair is what we do every day.
As part of every BMW gearbox repair or rebuild, we carry out a full transmission fluid and filter service using manufacturer-approved gearbox oils and replacement components. Clean transmission fluid is an essential part of protecting the gearbox and ensuring the repair is completed correctly.
If your BMW gearbox does not feel right, there is usually an underlying fault causing it. Early gearbox diagnostics can often prevent further internal damage and reduce the overall repair cost.
Call our BMW gearbox specialists and describe the symptoms you are experiencing. In many cases we can tell you over the phone whether your BMW is likely to need a gearbox repair, clutch repair, transmission rebuild, fluid service or further diagnostic testing before the vehicle even arrives with us.
We carry out all of the above as part of our gearbox repair and diagnostic work. If the fluid change resolves the issue, that is all we charge for. If the diagnostic finds something more serious, you get a fixed quote before we touch anything.
Call 01580 239 610As well as gearbox work, Service4Service South-East handles BMW engine repairs. Engine management lights, timing chain problems, head gasket failures, misfires and turbo faults are all diagnosed and fixed at a fraction of main dealer cost.
We cover common BMW petrol and diesel engines including petrol, diesel, xDrive and M Sport models across the 1 Series, 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X1, X3, X5 and X6 ranges.

Common questions from BMW owners in the South-East, answered by our technicians.
This is one of the most common complaints we hear from ZF automatic and DCT-equipped BMWs. The 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5 and 7 Series are models we see regularly. The judder usually happens because the dual-clutch pack, mechatronic unit or transmission calibration is no longer working smoothly. It is most noticeable in slow-moving traffic, on hills or when reversing. Some owners put up with it for months assuming it is normal. It is not. Left long enough, worn clutch packs can cause further internal damage. An BMW gearbox diagnostic will confirm the fault within an hour.
We rebuild and recondition ZF automatic and DCT units in the South-East. Most jobs are completed in one to two days*.
A gearbox warning light on an BMW typically indicates the mechatronic unit, clutch pack or a transmission sensor has detected a fault. The most common causes are mechatronic unit failure, low hydraulic pressure, a worn position sensor, or a clutch pack that has gone beyond its wear limit. In some cases the car will refuse to select gears and go into a safe or limp mode. Do not ignore a gearbox warning light. The ZF automatic and DCT system relies on hydraulic pressure, electronics and clutch control, and running it with a fault can accelerate mechatronic and clutch wear.
We have the specialist software to read BMW gearbox fault codes and the parts to fix BMW ZF automatic, DCT and Steptronic gearbox units properly. A diagnostic starts from £30.
It depends on the gearbox type and the fault. An ZF automatic mechatronic overhaul and a ZF automatic torque converter replacement are very different jobs in terms of parts and labour. Our prices are up to 60% less than an BMW main dealer for the same quality of work using approved parts. We quote a fixed price before we start. There are no hidden charges and the £30 diagnostic fee comes off your repair bill if you go ahead.
Call 01580 239 610 for a ballpark figure on your specific model and fault.
Some faults allow short journeys but most get worse quickly under load. If your BMW has a gearbox warning light, is slipping out of gear on the motorway, is refusing to select drive or reverse, or is making grinding or clunking noises, you should not drive it further than necessary. Continuing to drive with an active gearbox fault almost always turns a repairable problem into a full rebuild or replacement. We offer vehicle recovery across the South-East if your car cannot be driven to us.
Repair or reconditioning is almost always cheaper than replacement. A full gearbox replacement is expensive regardless of who does it. The majority of BMW gearbox faults are repairable. ZF automatic mechatronic failure, clutch pack wear, valve body faults and fluid leaks can all be fixed without replacing the whole unit. We diagnose first, quote second, and only start work when you approve it. We will only recommend a full replacement if the unit is beyond economic repair. You will not be sold unnecessary work.
No. Under Block Exemption legislation you have the legal right to use any qualified independent specialist without voiding your BMW manufacturer's warranty. The only conditions are that approved parts are used and the technicians are qualified. We meet both requirements on every job. This applies whether your car is still under the original warranty or an extended warranty. You do not have to go to an BMW main dealer to keep your warranty intact, and you will almost certainly pay significantly less with us.
BMW ZF automatic, Steptronic and DCT gearboxes have a few well-known fault patterns. Mechatronic unit failure is a common cause of warning lights and gear selection problems. Clutch pack wear can cause the characteristic shudder on pull-away. Solenoid and valve body faults can lead to jerky or delayed shifts. Oil contamination or low fluid can damage multiple components at once. On ZF automatic models, torque converter wear is a common cause of harsh shifting and shudder. Early diagnosis on all of these helps prevent much more expensive consequential damage.
