The Hyundai i30 uses more than one dual-clutch system, which makes model identification essential. Mainstream third-generation cars commonly use seven-speed DCT, while the i30 N uses a stronger eight-speed wet N DCT designed for performance use.
A low-speed shake on a 1.5 T-GDi DCT and a hard shift or warning on an i30 N may feel related, but the clutch hardware, hydraulic system and heat management are different.
Early i30 automatics used conventional transmissions, later second-generation cars introduced dual-clutch applications, and the current range uses seven-speed DCT widely. The i30 N adds a dedicated eight-speed wet DCT.
| i30 generation / type | Typical UK versions | Automatic gearbox | What owners often search for |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-generation i30, 2007–2012 | Selected petrol/diesel automatic versions | Conventional automatic on relevant models | i30 automatic fault, delayed Drive, harsh shifts |
| Second-generation i30, 2012–2017 | Petrol and diesel automatic derivatives | Conventional automatic and later dual-clutch applications depending on engine/year | i30 DCT judder, gearbox warning, automatic slipping |
| Third-generation i30, 2017–present | T-GDi, CRDi and mild-hybrid automatic versions | 7-speed DCT widely used | i30 7DCT repair, mechatronic, clutch judder |
| i30 N Performance, relevant 2021–2024 models | 2.0 T-GDi Performance | 8-speed wet N DCT | i30 N DCT fault, wet DCT repair, performance gearbox warning |
Seven-speed DCT on mainstream i30 models uses dry-clutch technology on relevant applications, making clutch wear, adaptation and low-speed control important when judder develops.
The eight-speed wet N DCT is a higher-capacity performance transmission with oil-cooled clutches and different hydraulic control. It should not be treated as a stronger version of the standard 7DCT with identical repair parts.
Earlier conventional automatic i30s use torque-converter and valve-body hydraulics, so delayed engagement or shudder on those cars follows a different diagnostic route.
i30 searches split clearly between '7DCT judder', 'mechatronic fault', 'clutch slipping' and performance-specific queries such as 'i30 N DCT warning' or 'N DCT overheating'. The transmission family determines which clutch and pressure data matters.
Mainstream 7DCT pull-away judder can be caused by clutch wear, adaptation, actuator control or flywheel movement.
An N DCT that shifts harshly under load may need pressure, clutch temperature and hydraulic-control data checked rather than assumptions from the dry-clutch 7DCT.
Delayed Drive can come from clutch application on DCT models or hydraulic pressure on earlier conventional automatics.
Gearbox warnings can be triggered by clutch, actuator, sensor, temperature or ratio faults and should be scanned before the vehicle is driven hard.
RPM flare under acceleration points towards clutch or internal slip and is particularly important on performance models where load is higher.
Whine or vibration can also come from differential, driveshaft, engine mount or wheel-bearing faults and should be isolated before gearbox repair.
Tell us whether the i30 problem appears during slow manoeuvring, a hard upshift, sustained performance driving or only once the transmission is hot. The pattern helps separate standard 7DCT and N DCT behaviour.
| What you notice | How drivers describe it | Possible areas to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Judder pulling away | “It shakes as I move off or reverse.” | Clutch/actuator, adaptation, mechatronic control, flywheel or mounts |
| Delay then thump | “I select Drive and it pauses before engaging.” | Hydraulic pressure, clutch application, actuator or valve-body/mechatronic operation |
| RPM flare | “The revs rise before the next gear takes.” | Clutch slip, pressure loss, converter lock-up or internal wear |
| Harsh downshift | “It bangs as I slow down.” | Adaptation, solenoid/clutch control, mounts or internal wear |
| Whine or hum | “The noise changes with road speed.” | Transmission bearings, differential, driveshaft or wheel bearing |
| Warning / limited gears | “The transmission warning appears and it stops shifting normally.” | Stored TCM DTC, pressure/control fault, clutch data or protection mode |
i30 fault codes are matched to clutch position, pressure, temperature and adaptation data from the specific 7DCT or N 8DCT fitted. The same generic code can lead to different checks on the two systems.
| Fault code | What it broadly relates to | What may need checking |
|---|---|---|
| P0700 | Transmission control system warning request | Read the transmission control module for the underlying gearbox-specific DTCs |
| P0715 | Input / turbine speed sensor circuit | Speed-sensor signal, wiring, control data and internal transmission operation |
| P0722 | Output speed sensor signal fault | Output-speed signal, wiring, sensor data and transmission control |
| P0730 | Incorrect gear ratio | Commanded versus actual ratio, clutch application, hydraulic pressure and internal wear |
| P0741 | Torque-converter clutch performance on applicable conventional automatics | Converter lock-up, valve body, pressure control and fluid condition |
The i30 N 8-speed wet DCT and mainstream seven-speed DCT use different clutch and hydraulic hardware.
i30 pricing reflects the transmission: standard 7DCT clutch and mechatronic work is separate from the more complex wet 8DCT used by the i30 N.
| Hyundai i30 gearbox work | Typical guide range | What can change the price? |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic scan and road test | From £30 | 7DCT versus N 8DCT |
| 7DCT clutch-pack repair / replacement | Approx. £900 - £1,600 | Clutch condition, flywheel and adaptations |
| DCT mechatronic / actuator repair | Approx. £700 - £4k+ | Hydraulic/electronic fault |
| Full 7DCT repair / reconditioning | Approx. £2k - £4k+ | Internal damage and required parts |
| i30 N 8DCT repair / reconditioning | Approx. £3k - £4.5k+ | Wet clutch, hydraulic and internal damage |
We identify the i30 generation, engine and whether the vehicle uses 7DCT, N 8DCT or an earlier conventional automatic.
Hyundai diagnostics are used to inspect clutch, pressure, temperature, actuator and transmission-control data.
The fault is reproduced at the load and temperature where it appears, including performance driving symptoms where safe.
We then quote the specific clutch, mechatronic, hydraulic or internal repair supported by the findings.
Tell us whether the i30 is a standard DCT or i30 N if known, and whether the issue is judder, harsh shifts, slipping, overheating or a warning message.

On mainstream seven-speed DCT models, clutch wear, adaptation, actuator control and flywheel movement are common causes of pull-away judder.
No. The i30 N uses a higher-capacity eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission with different clutch, cooling and hydraulic hardware.
High clutch temperature, hydraulic-control faults, pressure problems, sensors or internal transmission issues can all trigger protection warnings under load.
Many hydraulic, actuator and electronic faults can be repaired or reconditioned once live data and pressure testing confirm the cause.
The guide table lists standard 7DCT clutch repair around £900–£1,600 and full 7DCT reconditioning around £2k–£4k, while N 8DCT work can reach roughly £3k–£4.5k.
If the car is slipping, overheating, losing gears or remaining in protection mode, avoid unnecessary driving because continued load can increase clutch and internal damage.
For an i30 gearbox problem, distinguish conventional automatic, seven-speed DCT and i30 N eight-speed wet DCT before testing the clutch and hydraulic systems.
