Aisin AWF21
The early Aisin six-speed uses conventional hydraulic control and torque-converter operation. Delayed engagement and harsh changes are investigated through pressure, valve-body, converter and clutch behaviour.

The Range Rover Evoque has changed transmission architecture several times, so a gearbox complaint makes most sense only once the generation is identified. Early L538 automatics use an Aisin six-speed, later first-generation and L551 four-cylinder cars use ZF nine-speed technology, and the P300e adds a dedicated hybrid eight-speed.
A low-speed jolt in an early six-speed car, a hesitant shift in a 9HP48 and a P300e transmission warning can all feel like 'the gearbox is going', but the hydraulic and control systems behind those symptoms are completely different.

Evoque automatic development moves from the Aisin AWF21 six-speed on early L538 models to ZF 9HP48 on later first-generation and L551 four-cylinder AWD applications, while P300e uses a separate eight-speed automatic integrated into the plug-in hybrid system.

The early Aisin six-speed uses conventional hydraulic control and torque-converter operation. Delayed engagement and harsh changes are investigated through pressure, valve-body, converter and clutch behaviour.
ZF 9HP48 uses nine ratios with compact internal clutch and dog-clutch elements. Low-speed shift quality depends on accurate hydraulic control, software/adaptation and correct clutch application.
P300e combines its automatic transmission with a hybrid rear-drive system, so warning messages and poor take-up may need transmission and electrified-powertrain data assessed together.
Evoque owners commonly search for '9-speed gearbox problems', 'harsh low-speed shift', 'delay selecting Drive', 'gearbox fault warning' and 'P300e transmission fault'. Those phrases help define the symptom, while the generation tells us which transmission can actually be responsible.
A pause followed by a jolt into Drive can be caused by hydraulic pressure delay, valve-body control, clutch application or mounting movement.
Jerky town-speed changes on a 9HP can involve adaptation, software level, hydraulic control or internal clutch/dog-clutch operation.
RPM flare during an upshift suggests that requested clutch capacity and actual torque transfer are not matching correctly.
A transmission warning or limp mode should be investigated with the underlying TCM codes rather than treated as proof that the whole gearbox has failed.
A whine that changes with road speed can come from transmission bearings, pump or final drive, but wheel and driveline noise should also be excluded.
Under-load vibration may come from the transmission or from PTU, propshaft, driveshaft, tyre or wheel components on AWD versions.

For an Evoque, tell us whether the problem is a single hard engagement, repeated low-speed hunting, a road-speed whine or a fault that only appears once the vehicle is hot. That operating pattern is especially useful on the 9HP.
| What you notice | How drivers describe it | Possible areas to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Bang or thump into Drive | “It pauses and then goes into gear with a jolt.” | Hydraulic pressure, valve body, adaptation, clutch application or mounts |
| Jerky changes at low speed | “It cannot decide which gear it wants around town.” | 9HP adaptation, software, valve-body control or internal clutch/dog-clutch operation |
| Whining noise | “The whine changes with road speed or gear.” | Fluid level/condition, bearings, pump or final-drive components |
| Shudder under acceleration | “It feels like a vibration through the floor.” | Transmission clutch/pressure control, PTU, propshaft, driveshaft or wheel/tyre issue |
| RPM flare | “The revs rise before the gear catches.” | Clutch application, hydraulic pressure loss, solenoid/valve-body fault or internal wear |
| Stuck in a gear / limp mode | “The gearbox fault came up and it stopped changing normally.” | TCM fault, hydraulic control, internal diagnostic fault or protection mode |
Evoque codes are interpreted with transmission serial/application data, oil condition, software level, clutch operation and ratio information. A generic P0700-style warning is only the starting point for the underlying transmission diagnosis.
| Fault code | What it broadly relates to | What may need checking |
|---|---|---|
| P07D4-07 | 9HP internal transmission diagnostic fault documented by JLR | Transmission serial number, oil level/leaks, TCM software and internal transmission condition |
| P2704-07 | Transmission friction element apply-time / internal diagnostic fault documented by JLR | Serial-number applicability, fluid level, leaks, software and internal clutch operation |
| P07E7-07 | 9HP internal transmission diagnostic fault documented by JLR | Oil level, leak points, software level and internal transmission diagnosis |
| P0700 | Transmission control system has requested a warning / MIL | Read the TCM for the underlying transmission-specific DTCs |
| P0730 | Incorrect gear ratio | Commanded versus actual ratio, clutch application, pressure control and internal wear |
| P0741 | Torque-converter clutch performance / stuck off on applicable conventional automatics | Converter lock-up operation, valve body, pressure control and transmission condition |
An early Aisin six-speed, ZF 9HP48 and P300e eight-speed should never be treated as the same Evoque gearbox.
Evoque repair cost depends on whether the failed system is the early six-speed hydraulic unit, 9HP valve-body/internal transmission or the P300e hybrid-integrated automatic.
| Range Rover Evoque gearbox work | Typical guide range | What can change the price? |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic scan, road test and initial assessment | From £30 | Depth of testing and whether further pressure/live-data checks are needed |
| Valve-body / solenoid related repair | Approx. £700 - £1,500 | Transmission type, solenoids, hydraulic wear and coding/adaptation requirements |
| Early Aisin six-speed repair / reconditioning | Approx. £2k - £4k+ | Internal wear, valve body, clutches and hard-part damage |
| ZF 9HP48 full repair / reconditioning | Approx. £2k - £4k+ | Internal damage, clutch/dog-clutch components, valve body and labour |
| P300e hybrid transmission repair | Diagnosis required | Hybrid system interaction, exact transmission fault and component required |
We confirm Evoque generation, engine, AWD/P300e specification and exact transmission before testing.
JLR-compatible diagnostics are used to review hydraulic, ratio, clutch and software/adaptation information.
The vehicle is road-tested during the low-speed, warm or loaded condition where the fault is most obvious.
We then quote the valve-body, internal, hybrid-integrated or full reconditioning work supported by the diagnosis.
Tell us whether your Evoque has a harsh low-speed shift, delayed Drive, RPM flare, whine or a gearbox warning and include the year/powertrain if known.

ZF 9HP shift quality can be affected by adaptation, software level, hydraulic control, valve-body operation or internal clutch and dog-clutch behaviour.
Hydraulic pressure build-up, valve-body control, clutch application and mounts can all create a delay followed by a harder engagement.
The transmission controller has detected an abnormal condition such as ratio, hydraulic, clutch or internal diagnostic faults and may restrict shifting to protect the unit.
Yes. Solenoid and hydraulic-control faults can often be repaired or reconditioned once live data and pressure testing confirm the valve body is responsible.
No. P300e uses a dedicated eight-speed automatic integrated into the plug-in hybrid powertrain, so its transmission faults require hybrid-aware diagnosis.
The guide table separates valve-body repair, early six-speed reconditioning and ZF 9HP48 reconditioning; P300e transmission work is quoted after diagnosis.
For an Evoque fault, identify six-speed, 9HP48 or P300e eight-speed first and then test the hydraulic, clutch or hybrid system that matches the vehicle.
