6-Speed PowerShift
Six-speed PowerShift uses a dual-clutch layout on relevant Fiesta applications. Clutch wear, actuator operation, TCM control and adaptation values are central when the car shakes or hesitates at low speed.

A Ford Fiesta gearbox problem is often first noticed in the exact situations PowerShift finds hardest: creeping in traffic, reversing into a space or moving away gently from a junction. A shake or hesitation at those moments can point towards clutch engagement or TCM control, but the Fiesta has also used conventional automatics.
The correct repair therefore starts by confirming whether the car has the earlier six-speed PowerShift, the later seven-speed PowerShift or another automatic transmission. We then test clutch, actuator, hydraulic and control data against the symptom.
Fiesta automatic technology changed across its final generations. Relevant Mk7 cars used six-speed PowerShift, Mk8 models included conventional automatic applications, and late EcoBoost Hybrid versions introduced a seven-speed PowerShift system.
| Fiesta generation / type | Typical UK versions | Automatic gearbox | What owners often search for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiesta Mk7, early 2010s | Selected petrol automatic versions | Conventional automatic or 6-speed PowerShift depending on engine/year | Fiesta automatic fault, PowerShift judder, delayed Drive |
| Fiesta Mk7 facelift, 2013–2017 | 1.0 EcoBoost and selected petrol automatic versions | 6-speed PowerShift dual-clutch on relevant versions | Fiesta PowerShift clutch fault, TCM warning, gearbox shudder |
| Fiesta Mk8, 2017–2020 | 1.0 EcoBoost automatic derivatives | Six-speed automatic on relevant versions | Fiesta automatic harsh shift, delayed engagement |
| Fiesta Mk8 facelift, 2020–2023 | 1.0 EcoBoost Hybrid 125 PS automatic | 7-speed PowerShift dual-clutch automatic | Fiesta 7-speed PowerShift repair, clutch judder, transmission warning |
Six-speed PowerShift uses a dual-clutch layout on relevant Fiesta applications. Clutch wear, actuator operation, TCM control and adaptation values are central when the car shakes or hesitates at low speed.
Seven-speed PowerShift on the later EcoBoost Hybrid is a separate transmission generation. Its clutch and control strategy should not be diagnosed using assumptions taken from the earlier six-speed unit.
Conventional automatic Fiesta versions use torque-converter and hydraulic control rather than the same dual-clutch architecture, so delayed engagement and harsh changes require a different set of checks.
Fiesta gearbox searches are typically very specific: 'PowerShift judder', 'TCM fault', 'delay selecting Drive', 'clutch shudder' and 'transmission malfunction'. Those phrases help identify the operating condition, but the gearbox code still decides which components should be tested.
A shake as the Fiesta moves away can be caused by PowerShift clutch wear, poor adaptation, actuator control or flywheel/mount movement.
If Drive or Reverse takes a moment to engage, clutch application, hydraulic control or conventional automatic pressure should be checked according to the unit fitted.
Harsh changes can result from adaptation, actuator/solenoid control, clutch wear or hydraulic pressure faults rather than one universal Fiesta problem.
A transmission warning or restricted-gear mode needs Ford-compatible diagnostics so the underlying TCM fault can be identified before parts are ordered.
Revs rising without matching vehicle speed can indicate clutch slip or loss of hydraulic control and should be investigated before further heat damage develops.
Whine, vibration or clunking can also come from mounts, driveshafts, differential or wheel bearings, so the gearbox should not be blamed from noise alone.
Tell us whether the Fiesta problem happens only on the first pull-away, after sitting in traffic, while reversing or once fully warm. That pattern helps distinguish clutch engagement, TCM control and conventional automatic faults.
| What you notice | How drivers describe it | Possible areas to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Judder pulling away | “It shakes when I move off or reverse.” | Clutch pack, adaptation, mechatronic control, flywheel or mounts |
| Delay then thump | “I select Drive and it pauses before engaging.” | Hydraulic pressure, clutch application, valve body/mechatronic or seals |
| RPM flare | “The revs rise before the next gear catches.” | Clutch slip, pressure loss, converter lock-up or internal wear |
| Harsh downshift | “It bangs as I slow down.” | Adaptation, solenoid/clutch control, mounts or internal wear |
| Whine or hum | “The noise changes with road speed.” | Transmission bearings, differential, driveshaft or wheel bearing |
| Warning / limited gears | “The transmission warning appears and it stops shifting normally.” | Stored TCM DTC, pressure/control fault, clutch data or protection mode |
Fiesta transmission codes are checked alongside clutch position, actuator behaviour, speed-sensor data and hydraulic information where relevant. The code points to the system; the supporting data identifies the likely failure.
| Fault code | What it broadly relates to | What may need checking |
|---|---|---|
| P0700 | Transmission control system warning request | Read the TCM for the underlying PowerShift or automatic-specific DTCs |
| P0715 | Input / turbine speed sensor circuit | Speed-sensor signal, wiring and TCM data |
| P0722 | Output speed sensor signal fault | Output speed signal, wiring and transmission control |
| P0730 | Incorrect gear ratio | Clutch slip, gear engagement, commanded versus actual ratio and internal wear |
| P090C | Clutch actuator circuit low on applicable PowerShift systems | Clutch actuator circuit, TCM control, wiring and actuator operation |
A six-speed PowerShift, seven-speed PowerShift and conventional Fiesta automatic should not be treated as the same gearbox.
Fiesta repair pricing depends on whether the failed area is a PowerShift clutch pack, TCM/actuator system, conventional automatic component or deeper internal damage.
| Ford Fiesta gearbox work | Typical guide range | What can change the price? |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic scan and road test | From £30 | Gearbox generation and fault complexity |
| PowerShift clutch-pack repair / replacement | Approx. £900 - £1,500 | Six-/seven-speed system, clutch condition and adaptations |
| TCM / actuator related repair | Approx. £700 - £1,700+ | Electronic/actuator failure and calibration |
| Full PowerShift repair / reconditioning | Approx. £1.8k - £4.5k+ | Internal damage and parts required |
| Conventional automatic repair | Diagnosis required | Exact transmission and failed component |
We identify the Fiesta generation, engine and exact automatic transmission.
Ford-compatible diagnostics are used to read TCM faults, clutch/actuator data and relevant hydraulic information.
The symptom is reproduced at the low-speed, temperature or load condition where it appears.
We then quote the clutch, control, hydraulic or full reconditioning work proven by the diagnosis.
Tell us whether the Fiesta is juddering from rest, hesitating into gear, losing gears, slipping or showing a transmission warning and include the year/engine if known.

Clutch wear, clutch adaptation, actuator control, TCM faults and flywheel or mounting movement are common areas to investigate on relevant PowerShift versions.
Common symptoms can include delayed engagement, missing gears, transmission warnings, restricted operation or inconsistent clutch control. Diagnostic codes and actuator data are needed to confirm the cause.
Yes in many cases. Clutch packs, TCM or actuator faults and internal components can often be repaired or reconditioned without replacing the complete gearbox.
The guide table on this page separates clutch-pack and TCM/actuator repairs from full PowerShift reconditioning, which is listed at approximately £1.8k–£3.5k.
The cause can include clutch application, actuator or TCM control, hydraulic pressure or conventional automatic faults depending on the transmission fitted.
If the car is slipping, losing gears, refusing engagement or staying in limp mode, unnecessary driving should be avoided because continued use can increase clutch or internal damage.
For a Fiesta automatic fault, identify six-speed PowerShift, seven-speed PowerShift or conventional automatic first and test the clutch, TCM or hydraulic system that matches it.
