6-Speed DCT
The hybrid 6DCT combines conventional clutch packs and gears with electric-motor assistance. Clutch control, actuator behaviour and hybrid torque delivery all influence low-speed smoothness.

The Kia Niro is fundamentally different from many automatic cars because Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid models use a six-speed dual-clutch transmission integrated with the electrified powertrain. The Niro EV, by contrast, uses a single-speed reduction drive.
If a Hybrid Niro judders away from a junction, hesitates as petrol and electric drive blend together or displays a transmission warning, the clutch and hybrid systems need to be assessed together.
Both first- and second-generation Niro HEV/PHEV models use a hybrid-specific six-speed DCT, while e-Niro/Niro EV uses a single-speed electric reduction drive. Powertrain type is therefore the most important identification step.
| Niro generation / type | Typical UK versions | Automatic gearbox | What owners often search for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Niro DE HEV/PHEV, 2016–2022 | 1.6 GDi Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid | Hybrid-specific 6DCT | Niro 6DCT fault, hybrid gearbox judder |
| Niro SG2 HEV/PHEV, 2022–present | 1.6 GDi Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid | Updated 6DCT | New Niro DCT warning, clutch fault |
| e-Niro / Niro EV | Battery-electric | Single-speed reduction drive | Niro EV reduction drive noise |
The hybrid 6DCT combines conventional clutch packs and gears with electric-motor assistance. Clutch control, actuator behaviour and hybrid torque delivery all influence low-speed smoothness.
Updated second-generation Niro models continue the DCT concept with revised hybrid integration, so gearbox data should be considered alongside battery, motor and engine operation.
Niro EV has no multi-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Noise, vibration or drive loss on the EV follows an electric reduction-drive diagnostic path instead.
Niro searches often include 'hybrid gearbox judder', '6DCT clutch fault', 'transmission warning', 'hesitation when pulling away' and 'EV reduction gear noise'. The powertrain determines whether those symptoms relate to DCT hardware or the electric drive unit.
Judder as a Hybrid or PHEV moves away can involve DCT clutch wear, adaptation, actuator control or the way hybrid torque is being blended.
Hesitation can occur when clutch engagement and electric-motor assistance are not coordinating smoothly under low-speed demand.
A transmission warning may involve the DCT, clutch actuator, sensors or hybrid control system and should be scanned across the relevant modules.
RPM flare on HEV/PHEV models can indicate incomplete clutch engagement and deserves prompt diagnosis.
Mechanical noise from a Niro EV should be traced through reduction-drive bearings, mounts and driveshaft components rather than treated as a 6DCT problem.
Vibration can also come from tyres, wheel bearings or driveline mounts, especially when the vehicle changes between propulsion modes.
Tell us whether the Niro is HEV, PHEV or EV and whether the problem occurs during pull-away, engine start/stop transitions, steady cruising or regenerative deceleration. That operating mode helps identify the system involved.
| What you notice | How drivers describe it | Possible areas to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Judder pulling away | “It shakes as I move off or reverse.” | Clutch pack, adaptation, actuator/mechatronic control, flywheel or mounts |
| Delay then thump | “I select Drive and it pauses before engaging.” | Hydraulic pressure, clutch application, valve body/mechatronic or seals |
| RPM flare | “The revs rise before the next gear catches.” | Clutch slip, pressure loss, converter lock-up or internal wear |
| Harsh downshift | “It bangs as I slow down.” | Adaptation, solenoid/clutch control, mounts or internal wear |
| Whine or hum | “The noise changes with road speed.” | Transmission bearings, differential, driveshaft or wheel bearing |
| Warning / limited gears | “The gearbox warning appears and it stops shifting normally.” | Stored TCM DTC, pressure/control fault, clutch data or protection mode |
Niro fault codes are read alongside DCT clutch data and hybrid-control information on HEV/PHEV models, or electric drive-unit data on EV versions. One generic transmission message cannot cover all three powertrains.
| Fault code | What it broadly relates to | What may need checking |
|---|---|---|
| P0700 | Transmission control system warning request | Read the Kia transmission control module for the underlying gearbox-specific DTCs |
| P0715 | Input / turbine speed sensor circuit | Speed-sensor signal, wiring, control data and internal transmission operation |
| P0722 | Output speed sensor signal fault | Output-speed signal, wiring, sensor data and transmission control |
| P0730 | Incorrect gear ratio | Commanded versus actual ratio, clutch application, hydraulic pressure and internal wear |
| P0741 | Torque-converter clutch performance on applicable conventional automatics | Converter lock-up, valve body, hydraulic pressure and fluid condition |
A Niro EV should never be diagnosed as though it uses the six-speed DCT fitted to the Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid.
Niro pricing ranges from clutch-pack and actuator/mechatronic work to full 6DCT reconditioning, while EV or deeper hybrid-integrated faults require vehicle-specific diagnosis.
| Kia Niro gearbox work | Typical guide range | What can change the price? |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic scan and road test | From £30 | HEV/PHEV and hybrid complexity |
| 6DCT clutch-pack repair / replacement | Approx. £900 - £1,700 | Clutch wear and hybrid integration |
| DCT actuator / mechatronic repair | Approx. £700 - £4k+ | Hydraulic/electronic fault |
| Full 6DCT / gearbox reconditioning | Approx. £2k - £4.5k+ | Transmission family and internal damage |
| Hybrid / EV integrated drive work | Diagnosis required | Motor or hybrid control involvement |
We establish whether the Niro is HEV, PHEV or EV and confirm its exact transmission or drive unit.
Kia-compatible diagnostics are used to inspect clutch, actuator, hybrid or electric-drive data as appropriate.
The fault is reproduced during the powertrain transition or road condition where it occurs.
We then quote the DCT, clutch, control or electric-drive repair supported by the findings.
Tell us whether your Niro is Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid or EV and describe the judder, hesitation, slipping, noise or warning message.

DCT clutch wear, clutch adaptation, actuator control and hybrid torque transition can all contribute, so transmission and hybrid data should be assessed together.
No. Niro Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid models use a six-speed dual-clutch transmission rather than a power-split e-CVT.
Yes. Clutch-pack and actuator/mechatronic faults can often be repaired separately if diagnosis shows the rest of the transmission is serviceable.
No. Niro EV uses a single-speed electric reduction drive rather than the six-speed DCT fitted to HEV and PHEV models.
The guide table lists 6DCT clutch work around £900–£1,700, actuator/mechatronic repair around £700–£1,500 and full reconditioning around £2k–£4.5k+.
Clutch control, actuator, sensor, ratio or hybrid-system faults can trigger warnings, so the gearbox and electrified powertrain should be scanned together.
For a Niro transmission complaint, identify HEV, PHEV or EV first and then separate DCT clutch behaviour from hybrid or electric-drive faults.
