8-Speed Wet DCT
Conventional Sorento automatics rely on hydraulic pressure and torque-converter operation. Valve-body wear, solenoids and converter lock-up are important when delayed Drive or shudder develops.

The Kia Sorento spans several automatic transmission families, from conventional five-/six-speed units to eight-speed automatic, eight-speed wet DCT and current Hybrid/PHEV six-speed automatic systems.
That range means a towing-related shudder on an older diesel Sorento, a harsh shift on an 8DCT model and a Hybrid transmission warning all require different data and different repair assumptions.
Older Sorento models use conventional five-/six-speed automatics, later UM derivatives add eight-speed automatic, MQ4 diesel uses an eight-speed wet DCT, and Hybrid/PHEV MQ4 versions use a six-speed automatic integrated with the electrified powertrain.
| Sorento generation / type | Typical UK versions | Automatic gearbox | What owners often search for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sorento BL/XM, 2003–2014 | Diesel/petrol automatics | Conventional 5-/6-speed automatic | Sorento converter shudder, delayed Drive |
| Sorento UM, 2015–2020 | 2.2 CRDi automatic AWD | Conventional 6-/8-speed automatic depending year | Sorento 8-speed fault, harsh shift |
| Sorento MQ4 diesel, 2020–present | 2.2 Smartstream CRDi | 8-speed wet DCT | Sorento 8DCT clutch / hydraulic fault |
| Sorento MQ4 HEV/PHEV | 1.6 T-GDi Hybrid / PHEV | 6-speed automatic | Sorento Hybrid transmission warning |
Conventional Sorento automatics rely on hydraulic pressure and torque-converter operation. Valve-body wear, solenoids and converter lock-up are important when delayed Drive or shudder develops.
The eight-speed wet DCT fitted to relevant MQ4 diesels uses oil-cooled clutches and hydraulic control designed for higher torque. Clutch condition, pressure and temperature data are central when the gearbox shifts poorly.
Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Sorentos use a six-speed automatic within an electrified drivetrain, so transmission faults should be interpreted alongside motor and hybrid-control operation.
Sorento searches often include '8DCT fault', 'converter shudder', 'harsh downshift', 'delay selecting Drive', 'Hybrid transmission warning' and 'gearbox problem when towing'. Generation and powertrain determine which of those clues matters most.
Steady-speed shudder on a conventional automatic can involve converter lock-up or surrounding AWD/driveline vibration.
A delay into Drive can result from slow pressure build-up, valve-body control, converter fill or internal clutch application.
An 8DCT that changes harshly may have wet-clutch, hydraulic, actuator or adaptation issues that need DCT-specific testing.
RPM flare under load indicates loss of clutch holding capacity or hydraulic pressure and should be investigated promptly.
Hybrid/PHEV warnings can involve the six-speed automatic or electrified powertrain, so the relevant modules should be scanned together.
Clunks under acceleration or towing can come from differential, propshaft, mounts or AWD components as well as the transmission.
Tell us whether the Sorento problem appears while towing, under heavy acceleration, at a steady cruise, after warm-up or during Hybrid/PHEV operation. Load history is particularly useful on this large AWD vehicle.
| What you notice | How drivers describe it | Possible areas to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Judder pulling away | “It shakes as I move off or reverse.” | Clutch pack, adaptation, actuator/mechatronic control, flywheel or mounts |
| Delay then thump | “I select Drive and it pauses before engaging.” | Hydraulic pressure, clutch application, valve body/mechatronic or seals |
| RPM flare | “The revs rise before the next gear catches.” | Clutch slip, pressure loss, converter lock-up or internal wear |
| Harsh downshift | “It bangs as I slow down.” | Adaptation, solenoid/clutch control, mounts or internal wear |
| Whine or hum | “The noise changes with road speed.” | Transmission bearings, differential, driveshaft or wheel bearing |
| Warning / limited gears | “The gearbox warning appears and it stops shifting normally.” | Stored TCM DTC, pressure/control fault, clutch data or protection mode |
Sorento fault codes are interpreted according to conventional automatic, wet 8DCT or Hybrid/PHEV architecture. Pressure, converter, clutch-temperature and hybrid data are used only where relevant to the fitted system.
| Fault code | What it broadly relates to | What may need checking |
|---|---|---|
| P0700 | Transmission control system warning request | Read the Kia transmission control module for the underlying gearbox-specific DTCs |
| P0715 | Input / turbine speed sensor circuit | Speed-sensor signal, wiring, control data and internal transmission operation |
| P0722 | Output speed sensor signal fault | Output-speed signal, wiring, sensor data and transmission control |
| P0730 | Incorrect gear ratio | Commanded versus actual ratio, clutch application, hydraulic pressure and internal wear |
| P0741 | Torque-converter clutch performance on applicable conventional automatics | Converter lock-up, valve body, hydraulic pressure and fluid condition |
MQ4 diesel 8DCT and Hybrid/PHEV six-speed automatic models use fundamentally different clutch and hydraulic systems.
Sorento repair pricing reflects the larger transmission hardware, from wet 8DCT clutch/hydraulic work and 6AT valve-body or converter repair to full reconditioning.
| Kia Sorento gearbox work | Typical guide range | What can change the price? |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic scan and road test | From £30 | Transmission, AWD and Hybrid/PHEV complexity |
| 8DCT clutch / hydraulic repair | Approx. £1,200 - £2,200 | Wet clutch and mechatronic condition |
| 6AT valve-body / converter repair | Approx. £900 - £1,800 | Hybrid/conventional automatic and failed component |
| Full conventional automatic / DCT gearbox reconditioning | Approx. £2.5k - £4.5k+ | Transmission family and internal damage |
| Hybrid / PHEV integrated transmission work | Diagnosis required | Electric-motor and hybrid-control involvement |
We confirm Sorento generation, engine, AWD and Hybrid/PHEV specification.
Kia-compatible diagnostics are used to inspect pressure, converter, wet-clutch, temperature and hybrid-control data.
The complaint is reproduced under the road speed or load condition where the owner notices it.
We then quote the conventional automatic, DCT or hybrid-integrated repair supported by the diagnosis.

On conventional automatic versions, torque-converter lock-up is one area to investigate, although propshaft, differential and AWD vibration can feel very similar.
Harsh changes, clutch slip, hesitation, overheating and transmission warnings can involve wet-clutch condition, hydraulic pressure, actuators or internal wear.
Hydraulic pressure loss, valve-body wear, converter fill and internal clutch application can all cause delayed engagement on conventional automatics.
Current Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Sorento models use a six-speed automatic transmission integrated with the electrified powertrain.
The guide table lists 8DCT clutch/hydraulic work around £1,200–£2,200, 6AT valve-body/converter work around £900–£1,800 and full reconditioning around £2.5k–£4.5k+.
Yes. Propshaft, differential, driveshaft and AWD components can create shudder or clunks that should be ruled out before internal transmission repair.
For a Sorento fault, identify conventional auto, eight-speed wet DCT or Hybrid/PHEV 6AT first and separate gearbox faults from AWD and hybrid-system behaviour.
