Automatic Boxster models moved from conventional Tiptronic S on earlier 986/987 cars to seven-speed PDK on later 987.2, 981 and 718 generations. Current 718 Boxster models with automatic transmission use seven-speed PDK.
If your Boxster judders while manoeuvring, refuses a gear, displays a PDK warning, slips under acceleration or changes harshly once hot, we identify the generation before testing clutch, mechatronic or Tiptronic hydraulic data.
Boxster automatic technology progressed from five-speed Tiptronic S on earlier cars to seven-speed PDK from the 987.2 era onward. The 718 automatic continues to use seven-speed PDK.
| Boxster generation | Typical automatic transmission | Key diagnostic areas | What owners often search |
|---|---|---|---|
| 986 Boxster | Tiptronic S | Valve body, solenoids, converter and internal clutches | 986 Tiptronic problems, delayed Drive |
| 987.1 Boxster | Tiptronic S on automatic versions | Hydraulic pressure, converter lock-up and shift control | 987 Tiptronic fault, harsh shift |
| 987.2 / 981 Boxster | 7-speed PDK | Clutch, mechatronic, pressure and selector diagnosis | Boxster PDK judder, gearbox warning |
| 718 Boxster | 7-speed PDK on automatic versions | PDK clutch, mechatronic, gear selection and temperature | 718 Boxster PDK problem, reverse unavailable |
Earlier Boxsters use a torque converter, making delayed engagement and valve-body issues different from later PDK faults.
PDK dual clutches and pre-selected gears provide fast changes but bring clutch adaptation and mechatronic fault paths.
Hydraulic/electronic faults can produce warnings, missing gears or poor take-up.
Mechanical noises close to the cabin can originate outside the gearbox and should be isolated before internal work.
Boxster search intent commonly includes “Boxster PDK problems”, “718 PDK judder”, “Boxster reverse unavailable”, “987 Tiptronic fault” and “PDK mechatronic repair”.
Clutch wear or adaptation can make parking-speed take-up uneven.
Mechatronic, selector, actuator or clutch-path faults can prevent a gear engaging.
Speed-sensor, pressure, clutch or gear-selection faults can trigger protection mode.
PDK clutch wear or pressure weakness can create flare under load.
Temperature can expose pressure or clutch-control weaknesses.
Older cars can pause before engagement because of valve-body or converter/hydraulic faults.
Tell us whether the Boxster is 986, 987, 981 or 718 and whether the symptom occurs during parking, a particular gear change or only once fully warm.
| What you notice | How owners often describe it | Possible areas to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| PDK judder | “It shudders as I creep.” | Clutch wear, adaptation, mechatronic |
| Gear unavailable | “Reverse or a gear will not select.” | Selector, clutch path, actuator, sensors |
| RPM flare | “The revs rise before it catches.” | PDK clutch slip, pressure loss |
| Hot harsh shift | “It gets rough after a long drive.” | Pressure, temperature, clutch adaptation |
| Tiptronic delay | “Drive takes a moment to engage.” | Valve body, converter fill, hydraulic pressure |
Boxster codes should be interpreted using generation-specific Tiptronic or PDK data rather than treating every automatic model as the same gearbox.
| Fault / code family | Broad area | What should be checked |
|---|---|---|
| PDK clutch faults | Dual-clutch system | Wear values, adaptation, temperature |
| Gear-selection faults | Mechatronic | Actuator, selected gear, position sensors |
| Hydraulic pressure faults | PDK / Tiptronic | Pump, pressure, solenoids, leakage |
| Ratio / speed faults | Transmission state | Input/output speeds and clutch slip |
| Converter faults | Tiptronic S | Lock-up slip, fluid and valve-body control |
On the Boxster, stored codes should be interpreted with the exact gearbox, freeze-frame information and live drivetrain values before a complete transmission replacement is considered.
Boxster costs depend on older Tiptronic versus seven-speed PDK. Clutch or mechatronic work should be separated from full gearbox reconditioning.
| Porsche Boxster gearbox work | Typical guide range | What can change the price? |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic scan and road test | From £30 | Generation and gearbox type |
| PDK clutch / adaptation repair | Approx. £1.1k - £2.4k+ | Clutch wear and parts |
| PDK mechatronic / hydraulic repair | Approx. £1.1k - £2.5k+ | Control fault and contamination |
| Tiptronic valve-body / converter repair | Approx. £900 - £2k+ | Hydraulic condition |
| Full PDK / Tiptronic reconditioning | Approx. £2.6k - £5.2k+ | Internal damage and generation |
Identify 986/987 Tiptronic versus 987.2/981/718 seven-speed PDK from VIN data.
Read clutch, pressure, gear-selection, speed and temperature values with Porsche diagnostics.
Road-test the Boxster during the manoeuvre or shift where the complaint appears.
Quote the clutch, mechatronic, hydraulic, converter or internal repair indicated by testing.

Automatic 718 Boxster models use a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) dual-clutch transmission.
Yes. Earlier 986 and 987.1 automatic Boxsters used Tiptronic S before PDK replaced it on later generations.
Clutch wear, adaptation values, hydraulic pressure or mechatronic control can cause shudder while manoeuvring.
A selector, clutch-path, actuator, sensor or mechatronic fault can stop Reverse engaging normally.
Yes. PDK clutch, mechatronic, hydraulic and internal repairs may be possible depending on the diagnosis.
A targeted PDK or Tiptronic repair can be much less costly than a complete rebuild, so generation-specific diagnosis comes first.
For a Boxster gearbox problem, identify early Tiptronic S versus seven-speed PDK first and then diagnose the hydraulic or clutch-control system that matches the car.
