The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has moved through several conventional automatic generations, from 5G-TRONIC and 7G-TRONIC to widespread 9G-TRONIC. A W204 conductor-plate complaint and a W206 9-speed shift issue therefore belong to different diagnostic eras.

9G-TRONIC adds more ratios and a different electrohydraulic strategy. Shift quality depends on accurate clutch filling, pressure regulation, converter operation and adaptation across a larger number of events.
On 4MATIC and electrified C-Class derivatives, drivetrain or hybrid behaviour can create symptoms that overlap with the automatic transmission and should be checked where relevant.

W204, W205 and W206 automatic systems should not be grouped under one generic Mercedes gearbox diagnosis.
