ZF 6-Speed Automatic
The earlier six-speed ZF automatic can develop age-related valve-body wear, converter problems and clutch pressure loss that show up as delayed engagement or rough shifts.

The Land Rover Discovery has passed through both six-speed and eight-speed ZF automatic generations, while keeping a complex 4x4 driveline around them. That makes model generation the first piece of information we need when the vehicle starts shuddering, delaying into gear or shifting harshly.
A Discovery 3 with a six-speed hydraulic fault, a late Discovery 4 with 8HP70 and a Discovery 5 showing a gearbox warning may produce similar driver complaints for very different technical reasons.
Discovery 3 and early Discovery 4 models use ZF six-speed automatic transmission on relevant versions, later Discovery 4 diesels introduced the 8HP70, and Discovery 5 continued with eight-speed ZF automatics across the engine range.
| Discovery generation / type | Typical UK versions | Automatic gearbox | What owners often search for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery 3, 2004–2009 | TDV6 and V8 automatic versions | ZF 6-speed automatic on relevant models | Discovery 3 gearbox shudder, delayed Drive, valve-body fault |
| Discovery 4, 2009–2011 | 3.0 TDV6/SDV6 and V8 | ZF 6-speed automatic on relevant early applications | Discovery 4 6-speed fault, converter shudder |
| Discovery 4, 2012–2016 | 3.0 TDV6 / SDV6 diesel | ZF 8HP70 8-speed automatic on relevant EU5 diesel versions | Discovery 4 8HP70 repair, harsh shifts |
| Discovery 5, 2017–present | Four- and six-cylinder petrol/diesel/MHEV versions | ZF 8-speed automatic | Discovery 5 gearbox warning, 8-speed shudder |
The earlier six-speed ZF automatic can develop age-related valve-body wear, converter problems and clutch pressure loss that show up as delayed engagement or rough shifts.
The 8HP70 used on later Discovery 4 models introduced a different hydraulic and adaptation strategy, so six-speed repair assumptions should not be carried across to those vehicles.
Discovery 5 retains an eight-speed concept but integrates it closely with modern engine management, low-range 4x4 hardware and newer driveline control systems.
Searches such as 'Discovery 3 gearbox shudder', 'Discovery 4 8HP70 fault', 'delayed Drive' and 'Discovery 5 transmission warning' all describe useful symptoms. The generation tells us which ZF hardware and which 4x4 components need to be checked first.
A steady-speed tremor can arise from torque-converter lock-up, but propshaft, differential and wheel-related vibration should be ruled out alongside it.
Delayed engagement may be caused by hydraulic pressure leakage, valve-body wear, converter fill or internal clutch application.
Harsh downshifts can be influenced by adaptation values, solenoid response, hydraulic wear or driveline backlash.
RPM flare under load can indicate insufficient clutch holding pressure and should be investigated before continued towing or heavy use.
A warning or restricted-gear condition needs the underlying Land Rover transmission DTCs read rather than interpreted only from the dashboard message.
Clunks when load is applied or removed may come from transfer-case, propshaft, differential or mounting components rather than the automatic transmission.
For a Discovery, tell us the generation and whether the symptom appears while towing, during a steady cruise, on a particular downshift or when the 4x4 system is heavily loaded. Those conditions help narrow the fault area quickly.
| What you notice | How drivers describe it | Possible areas to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Delay then thump | “I select Drive and it pauses before engaging.” | Hydraulic pressure, clutch application, valve body, converter fill or seals |
| Shudder at steady speed | “It vibrates gently when cruising.” | Torque-converter lock-up, valve body, propshaft/differential or tyres |
| RPM flare | “The revs rise before the next gear catches.” | Internal clutch slip, pressure loss, valve body or worn sealing elements |
| Harsh downshift | “It bangs as I slow down.” | Adaptation, pressure-control solenoid, valve body, mounts or internal wear |
| Whine / clunk | “It makes a noise when drive loads and unloads.” | Transmission, transfer case, differential, propshaft or mount |
| Warning / limited gears | “The gearbox warning appears and it stops shifting normally.” | Stored TCM DTC, pressure/control fault, sensor data or protection mode |
Discovery codes are interpreted with transmission temperature, converter slip, pressure and ratio information. The same generic code can have different implications on an older six-speed vehicle and a later 8HP-equipped model.
| Fault code | What it broadly relates to | What may need checking |
|---|---|---|
| P0700 | Transmission control system warning request | Read the Land Rover transmission control module for the underlying gearbox-specific DTCs |
| P0715 | Input / turbine speed sensor circuit | Speed-sensor signal, wiring, control data and internal transmission operation |
| P0730 | Incorrect gear ratio | Commanded versus actual ratio, clutch application, hydraulic pressure and internal wear |
| P0741 | Torque-converter clutch performance on applicable conventional automatics | Converter lock-up, valve body, hydraulic pressure and fluid condition |
| P0796 | Pressure-control solenoid performance / stuck condition | Valve body, solenoid operation, pressure regulation and hydraulic integrity |
Discovery generation and exact ZF gearbox should be confirmed before valve-body, converter or internal components are specified.
Discovery repair pricing varies according to six- or eight-speed hardware, with separate guide ranges for valve-body, converter and full reconditioning work. Transfer-case repairs are assessed independently.
| Land Rover Discovery gearbox work | Typical guide range | What can change the price? |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic scan and road test | From £30 | Generation, 4x4 and fault complexity |
| Valve-body / solenoid repair | Approx. £900 - £1,700 | Hydraulic wear and transmission family |
| Torque-converter related repair | Approx. £1,000 - £1,900 | Converter condition and removal labour |
| Full conventional automatic / gearbox reconditioning | Approx. £2.5k - £4.5k+ | Transmission family and internal damage |
| Transfer-case / driveline repair | Diagnosis required | 4x4 component and extent of damage |
We establish Discovery generation, engine, 4x4 specification and exact automatic gearbox.
Land Rover-compatible diagnostics are used to inspect pressure, converter slip, ratio and adaptation information.
The vehicle is tested under the road speed or load in which the owner notices the complaint.
We then define whether the correct repair belongs to the valve body, converter, internal gearbox or surrounding driveline.
Tell us whether your Discovery is a 3, 4 or 5 if known and describe the shudder, delayed engagement, harsh shift, slipping or warning message.

Torque-converter lock-up is a common area to investigate on the six-speed automatic, although propshaft, differential, wheel and tyre faults can create similar vibration.
Relevant 2012-on EU5 diesel Discovery 4 models use the ZF 8HP70 eight-speed automatic, while earlier Discovery 4 applications use six-speed automatic transmission.
Hydraulic pressure loss, valve-body wear, converter fill and internal clutch application can all cause delayed engagement, with the likely area depending on gearbox generation.
Many solenoid and pressure-control faults can be repaired or reconditioned once testing confirms the hydraulic control unit is the source of the problem.
The guide table lists full conventional automatic reconditioning around £2.5k–£4.5k+, with valve-body and converter repairs priced separately.
Yes. Transfer-case, propshaft and differential problems can create vibration, binding or clunks that may initially feel like an internal automatic transmission fault.
For a Discovery gearbox fault, identify six-speed versus 8HP generation first and then separate hydraulic, converter and 4x4 causes before major repair.
