6-Speed PowerShift
Six-speed PowerShift Mondeos use dual clutches and hydraulic/mechatronic control. Clutch wear, fluid condition, flywheel and control pressure are common areas when the vehicle judders or slips.

The Ford Mondeo spans PowerShift dual-clutch transmission, conventional automatics, an eight-speed automatic and a separate Hybrid power-split system. A gearbox warning on one Mondeo can therefore mean something very different on another.
PowerShift cars often make themselves known through low-speed judder or clutch slip, while conventional automatics are more likely to be assessed through hydraulic pressure, valve-body and torque-converter behaviour.
Mk4 and Mk5 Mondeos used six-speed PowerShift on relevant engines alongside conventional automatics, while the facelift Mk5 introduced an eight-speed automatic on relevant EcoBlue versions. Hybrid models use a Ford power-split automatic.
| Mondeo generation / type | Typical UK versions | Automatic gearbox | What owners often search for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mondeo Mk4, 2007–2014 | 2.0 TDCi / EcoBoost and selected automatic versions | Six-speed PowerShift on relevant models; conventional six-speed automatic on selected petrol engines | Mondeo PowerShift judder, gearbox slipping, mechatronic fault |
| Mondeo Mk5, 2015–2018 | 2.0 TDCi, EcoBoost and Hybrid | 6-speed PowerShift on relevant diesels; conventional automatic on EcoBoost; power-split automatic on Hybrid | Mondeo Powershift repair, Hybrid gearbox warning |
| Mondeo Mk5 facelift, 2019–2022 | 2.0 EcoBlue diesel and Hybrid | 8-speed automatic with relevant EcoBlue engines; power-split automatic on Hybrid | Mondeo 8-speed gearbox fault, Hybrid transmission, delayed Drive |
Six-speed PowerShift Mondeos use dual clutches and hydraulic/mechatronic control. Clutch wear, fluid condition, flywheel and control pressure are common areas when the vehicle judders or slips.
Eight-speed automatic EcoBlue versions use valve-body, solenoid and torque-converter control, changing the diagnostic priorities from PowerShift clutch operation to conventional automatic hydraulics.
Mondeo Hybrid uses a power-split transmission system designed around electrified drive. Hybrid-system data and transmission operation therefore need to be considered together.
Mondeo owners often search for 'PowerShift gearbox fault', 'juddering when pulling away', '8-speed auto problems', 'Hybrid transmission warning' or 'delayed Drive'. The generation tells us which of those terms is mechanically relevant.
PowerShift judder can involve clutch-pack wear, adaptation, hydraulic/mechatronic control or flywheel condition.
Delayed Drive on a conventional automatic can result from pressure leakage, valve-body wear, converter fill or internal clutch application.
Harsh shifts on the eight-speed can involve solenoids, pressure regulation, adaptation or internal transmission wear.
Hybrid warnings should be checked across the power-split transmission and hybrid control modules rather than treated as a conventional gearbox fault.
RPM flare suggests clutch or internal slip and can increase heat and damage if the vehicle continues to be driven hard.
Whine or vibration may come from the gearbox, mounts, driveshafts, differential or wheel bearings and should be isolated before strip-down.
Describe whether the Mondeo problem is a low-speed shake, a steady-road-speed shudder, an engagement delay or a Hybrid warning during electric/petrol transitions. The pattern directs the correct test.
| What you notice | How drivers describe it | Possible areas to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Judder pulling away | “It shakes when I move off or reverse.” | Clutch pack, adaptation, mechatronic control, flywheel or mounts |
| Delay then thump | “I select Drive and it pauses before engaging.” | Hydraulic pressure, clutch application, valve body/mechatronic or seals |
| RPM flare | “The revs rise before the next gear catches.” | Clutch slip, pressure loss, converter lock-up or internal wear |
| Harsh downshift | “It bangs as I slow down.” | Adaptation, solenoid/clutch control, mounts or internal wear |
| Whine or hum | “The noise changes with road speed.” | Transmission bearings, differential, driveshaft or wheel bearing |
| Warning / limited gears | “The transmission warning appears and it stops shifting normally.” | Stored TCM DTC, pressure/control fault, clutch data or protection mode |
Mondeo transmission codes are interpreted according to six-speed PowerShift, eight-speed automatic or Hybrid power-split architecture. The supporting clutch, hydraulic or electrified-system data is what turns the code into a diagnosis.
| Fault code | What it broadly relates to | What may need checking |
|---|---|---|
| P0700 | Transmission control system warning request | Read the Ford transmission control module for the underlying gearbox-specific DTCs |
| P0715 | Input / turbine speed sensor circuit | Speed-sensor signal, wiring, control data and internal transmission operation |
| P0722 | Output speed sensor signal fault | Output-speed signal, wiring, sensor data and transmission control |
| P0730 | Incorrect gear ratio | Commanded versus actual ratio, clutch application, hydraulic pressure and internal wear |
| P0741 | Torque-converter clutch performance on applicable conventional automatics | Converter lock-up, valve body, hydraulic pressure and fluid condition |
PowerShift, eight-speed and Hybrid Mondeos should not share one generic repair assumption.
Mondeo gearbox pricing ranges from PowerShift clutch/mechatronic work and eight-speed hydraulic repairs to full reconditioning, while Hybrid transmission jobs are assessed individually.
| Ford Mondeo gearbox work | Typical guide range | What can change the price? |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic scan and road test | From £30 | PowerShift, 8AT or Hybrid complexity |
| PowerShift clutch / mechatronic repair | Approx. £1,000 - £4k+ | Clutch condition, hydraulic control and flywheel |
| 8-speed valve-body / converter repair | Approx. £800 - £1,700+ | Hydraulic or converter failure |
| Full automatic gearbox reconditioning | Approx. £2.5k - £4.5k+ | Transmission family and internal damage |
| Mondeo Hybrid transmission work | Diagnosis required | Hybrid integration and exact failed component |
We confirm Mondeo generation, engine and PowerShift/eight-speed/Hybrid specification.
Ford diagnostics are used to read the transmission and hybrid modules appropriate to that version.
The vehicle is tested under the exact conditions in which the fault appears.
We then quote the targeted repair or reconditioning route shown by the diagnosis.
Tell us whether the Mondeo is PowerShift, EcoBlue automatic or Hybrid if known, plus whether it judders, delays, slips or shows a transmission warning.

Clutch wear, clutch adaptation, hydraulic/mechatronic control, transmission fluid condition and flywheel movement are common areas to investigate.
Delayed engagement, inconsistent gear selection, warning messages, harsh shifts and clutch-control faults can occur, but pressure and diagnostic data are needed to confirm the mechatronic unit.
Valve-body pressure regulation, solenoids, adaptations, converter behaviour and internal wear can all affect shift quality.
No. The Hybrid uses a power-split automatic integrated with the electrified powertrain, so PowerShift clutch and mechatronic assumptions do not apply.
The pricing table separates PowerShift clutch/mechatronic repair, eight-speed valve-body/converter work and full automatic reconditioning. Hybrid work is quoted after diagnosis.
Driving should be minimised if the revs flare, the car loses drive or the transmission overheats because continued slip can cause additional internal damage.
A Mondeo gearbox repair should begin by identifying PowerShift, eight-speed automatic or Hybrid power-split technology and testing the corresponding system.
